The History of St Augustine

The first European known to have explored the coasts of Florida was the Spanish explorer, Juan Ponce de León, who sailed in the area around 1513 as far north as about St. Augustine, naming the peninsula he believed to be an island "La Florida" and claiming it for the Spanish crown.

Saint Augustine was founded on September 8, 1565, by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. The King of Spain sent him to settle "La Forida" for Spain. He named the settlement "San Agustín", as his ships bearing settlers, troops, and supplies from Spain had first sighted land in Florida on August 28, 1565, the feast day of St. Augustine in the Catholic church. The city served as the capital of Spanish Florida for over 200 years. St Augustine is known as the oldest Port in the United states.

The Timucua were a Native American people who lived in Northeast and North Central Florida and southeast Georgia. They were the largest indigenous group in that area and consisted of about 35 chiefdoms,  leading thousands of people.

Timucua were never organized into a tribe. The Timucua practiced several different cultural traditions. The people died from the introduction of diseases, to which they had no immunity. They lost 75% of the people within 10 years.

How does St Augustine relate to the Mexico unit?

The Spanish came to conquer and claim the land, and everything on it. Another thing is that they quickly established a Fort to defend themselves. They also brought their religious beliefs, and forced natives to convert to it. Another way they have a similar story is in the way that the Spanish killed many Indians with diseases.
