House Hunting
Liz is waiting in line at a hardware store to buy letters that make up the number of her house. For example -- T, H, R, E, E.
It just happened that there were three other people ahead of her in line all doing the same thing. The first customer buys the number one. O, N, E. He pays two dollars. The next customer buys the number TWO, and she pays three dollars. The third customer buys the number ELEVEN, and he pays five dollars.
Liz is buying the number twelve. How much will she pay?

1. How much will Liz pay for her house numbers?

2. Which family member did you work with? Is there a reason why you chose that family member?

I worked with my Mom because my Dad got home very late, even though he was suppose to do this one.

3. How did you go about solving the problem? In other words, what did you try first? What did you try next? Did you use coins to help you? Who offered suggestions? (This should be at least three sentences long and include your process)

First we tried the number of letters, then we tried to figure out how much each letter is worth. We figured since the ONE was only $2, that the E must be free. Then we calculated the rest based on that.

4. Did you try anything that didn’t work? If so, what was it (be specific)

The number of letters did not make sense, since ONE and TWO had the same number of letters, but different costs.

5. What did you enjoy most about this process and what did you find to be the most challenging or frustrating (be specific).

We love doing things together, including math, we hope we have the right answer. We gave the V a higher value like in scrabble than the L ( so we think we could have given them both a $2). We have a spreadsheet with our calculations.
