Chickens & Greyhounds

Family Math #8

Chickens and Greyhounds...Oh My!

One sunny Saturday, Tracey’s chickens and greyhounds are all out in the yard together.  She is dog and chicken sitting, so there are more dogs and chickens than there normally are.  The dogs are sunbathing and the chickens are hunting for bugs.  Suddenly something gets them all riled up.  When Tracey looks out she is able to count 30 heads and 100 feet.  Can you determine how many 4 legged greyhounds there are and how many 2 legged chickens?

The Questions:

1.   How many greyhounds are there?  How many chickens?

There are 20 Greyhounds and 10 Chickens.

2.  Which family member did you work with?  Is there a reason why you chose that family member?

My mom who loves greyhounds and chickens ( me too!).

3.  How did you go about solving the problem?  In other words, what did you try first?  What did you try next?  Did you use coins to help you?  Who offered suggestions?  (This should be at least three sentences long and include your process)

First we tried 16 greyhounds and 14 chickens, not enough legs. So then we tried 18 Greyhounds and 12 chickens; again not enough legs. Finally we tried 20 greyhounds and 10 chickens and it all worked out perfectly to 30 heads and 100 legs.

4.  Did you try anything that didn’t work?  If so, what was it (be specific)

We explained it in questions #3.

5.  What did you enjoy most about this process and what did you find to be the most challenging or frustrating (be specific).

We liked the story the best! It would be fun to see Tracey take care of so many animals.
